OttoLight - Internet Controlled LED Lighting

Lately, my roommates and I decided to convert the spare back room of our house into a pillow and blanket fort. Naturally, this room wouldn't be complete without a dynamic, remote controlled lighting setup.

I still had some LED strips left over after my last project and they're perfect for mounting and lighting cheaply, if you don't mind programming a bit of hardware. My goal was to create a webpage that provided control to several strips with features like modifiable speed, colors, and animations. There would be one master controller that would wirelessly send commands to any number of nearby clients, which each had their own strip.

Large LED Display

Over the summer, I ordered a batch of WS2812B LED strips. Each pixel has a built in controller that lets you address an arbitrary number of points in full RGB with a single data line. Despite running into some small issues, I finally got it completed last week.

Overall, the display has 690(30x23) individually addressable RGB LEDs being controlled by a single BeagleBone Black. The BBB is running Yona Appletree's fork of the LEDscape library which allows for network control of the display. By sending OPC(open pixel control) commands to the BeagleBone over Wifi, any machine on our network can light up the display!

Electric Sheep Renders

The Electric Sheep project is one of the coolest collection of artwork that I know of. Users can install the screensaver, which displays a downloaded sequence of animated fractals while rendering frames to be uploaded to the server and added to the project. Users can also give designs a "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down", influencing which fractals get chosen to be "bred" together, creating a new generation of art.

By navigating their website for the most visually appealing frames and using the flam3-render tool, I was able to fully realize the potential of some fractals with HD renders and carefully selected parameters.
